Japanagain pt1: Tokyo!

We went to Japan this February/March for one of the most amazing trips. I thought after living for so long in Japan, I would somehow get less impressed each time we go, but the opposite seems to be true. There is still so much to explore and experience in Japan, I don’t think we will ever get enough of it .

There is a lot to show and tell, so I will dedicate a few posts to this amazing trip. The first one will be all about modern Tokyo!

The cherry blossoms were already blooming!

We spent about 4 days in Tokyo, slowly adjusting to the timezone, and these days were absolutely full of highlights. The weather was amazing so we walked around a lot. We went to the neighorhood of Asakusa, famous for the huge lantern, and from there made our way to the Tokyo Skytree.

Lots of rituals happening, involving incense, we also placed a few and we got a protective charm for in the car from Asakusa!

Asakusa lies next to the river, and on the opposite side you can see the Tokyo Skytree tower up.

As we made our way to the Skytree, we visited a small shrine that was completely dedicated to… onigiri! Very funny, we also got an onigiri charm there for good luck!

The shrine was hidden in the middle of a dense neighborhood, easy to miss.

From there the views on the Skytree were amazing!

The Cherryblossoms were blooooming already! Not only around Asakusa, but also the park next to the Ghibli Museum which we visited the next day.

The last day we had in Tokyo we dedicated to something really special… a traditional “tebori” tattoo (it literally means “to carve by hand”). No machines, just a piece of bamboo with a few metal shards attached to it and go! We went to a very cool tattoo place run by Horimitsu, who designs and makes tattoos in a very distinctive and colorful style.
He designed the tattoos and used traditional tools and techniques to create these fantastic vibrant tattoos.
Ward got a tiger and I got…. Ohsho!

It actually hurt less than a traditional machine, because the pacing is less intense and with many breaks. I’d love to get another one haha.

We also met up with a lot of amazing friends from way back, which was really nice and nostalgic. We had a great four days in Tokyo, but it was time to catch the Shinkansen to Kyoto!
