The first week of June we spent in the beautiful fairytale land of the Faroe Islands. Only a 1,5 hour flight from Copenhagen, this little island is a magical paradise. It is foggy, rainy, harsh but o so beautiful! Faroe is a collection of several islands that are connected with underwater tunnels or ferries, and we visited most of them. I’m going to start with our adventures on the big island of Vagar, this is where the airport is, and you immediately get a nice impression of what the Faroe Islands are about!

Dramatic landscapes, islands covered in mist, and tons of sheep on the road!

Sheep who all had babies so the whole island was teeming with little lambs that were frolicking in the hills and on the road. We had to keep an eye out for them while driving around the island.

Around Vagar you can find some of the most iconic and dramatic islands and cliffs of Faroe. We were just amazed by the alien shapes all around us.

We visited the town of Gasadalur. When the tunnel to it wasn’t built yet, the people would either use their boats to get to the rest of the island or hike through the enormous mountains.

The houses all had grass roofs!

A few days later, we would return to this amazing place, but to see it from the water this time!

We booked a tour to see the famous puffins, who are nesting around these islands in June and July.

Properly dressed for a trip in the rain on a tiny boat, we got ready to see some puffins, seabirds and even a seal!

And here are the puffins!

The water was really wild and the trip was very exciting as the boat was soaring highspeed over the waves. We saw the rock formations from different angles and it was incredibly impressive.

It was a fantastic trip and seeing it from the angle below just made us admire Faroe even more.
After this wet trip the sun came out, and we took the opportunity to hike along the massive lake nearby. This lake, Leitisvatn, is Faroe’s largest lake but also has a very weird geological look as it lies high above the sea! You can hike all the way to the edge of the sea and see the height difference between the lake and the sea surrounding it. It looks very surreal!

But come on, again so beautiful landscapes. We spotted a gorge on the other side and decided to hike all the way over there to see what it was leading to!

But there was still a long way to go, a long way with amazing views.

In the image above you can see the ocean on the left, and the lake much higher up on the right!

We took a little coffee break and made some noodles with our portable stove, it was soooo nice in the sun!

There were many birds and huge rabbits all around us. It was a very quiet place. But it was time to reach that gorge! We climbed a very very steep hill (I got a bit of vertigo from it to be honest) and a lamb was guarding it:

We climbed all the way up and discovered a scary surprise: behind the edge was a steeeeep drop into a huge cliff!

And so we headed all the way back. It was already late in the day, but the sun doesn’t really set in Faroe summers, so it was light outside.

Those were our adventures on Vagar! But there is much much more spectacular things to see on the Faroe Islands, so next we’ll go to Kunoy & Kalsoy!
